Steps to build your Tray
1. Laid out the cut lines on your board. See the video below.
2. Rough cut all my boards on the Compound Mitre Saw.
3. On the Jointer, jointed a face side on all your boards.
4. On the Jointer, jointed a face edge on all your boards.
5. Planed all your boards to 7/8" thick on the planner.
6. On the table saw, cut the sides and ends of the tray to 3" wide.
7. On the table saw, made a 1/4" dado for the plywood bottom to fit into. Please you the example block to set up the location and depth of the dado.
8. On the other table saw, cut the sides to finished length. Remember to first trim one end of each board and then cut the other end of the board to length. This step makes sure both ends of the board at square. The finished cut sizes are 11 1/2" for the short sides and 17 1/2" for the long edges.
9. On the table saw, made the rabbet connections on the long sides only.
To set up the for the dados, measure the thickness of your boards. The dado blades will have to be set up to the same thickness. So if you planed your wood correctly, the thickness will be 7/8". You will need to two outside blades. Between the two outside blades you will need the thick 1/4" chipper, 2 chippers 1/8" and the next thickest chipper.
10. Cut the plywood for the bottom. Find a piece of plywood at the back of the room that is about 12" wide. Rough cut to 17 1/2" on the compound miter saw.
11. To make final sizing cut please watch the 'How to cut your plywood to the correct size'. If you need help please take your project to the back of the room near the machines to get assistance from the teacher.
12. Drill a 1 1/8" hole in the correct location to make the handles. Please use the example block to find the location of the holes.
13. Sanded the inside of the box though 80, 120, 180 and 220 grit sand paper. Sand the plywood only with 220 grit to make it smooth. If you have pencil lines you might have to use 120 and 180 grit first.
14. Watch the video on how to glue and read the instructions below the video.
15. Dry clamp your tray together to get ready of gluing. Check to make sure the corners are square before you glue.
More instructions to come soon.
Where to put glue?
When placing your glue on your project, you only need to place glue on the rabbet joint edges. This means you need glue on the end grains of the box side and the rabbet joint on the front and back of your box. Do not put glue in the dado joint where the plywood bottom is.
To not forget to clean up the wet left over glue.
After all your clamps are on and your project is square (90 degree corners), you need to remove all the wet glue that has come out of the edges. Use a wet paper towel and a puddy knife to remove all the wet glue. This step is a lot easier when the glue is wet.
