Pen Turning

Instructions

Step 1:  Cutting into two blanks.

Take your pen blank whether it is wood or acrylic acetate and cut it into 2 pieces no the band saw.  Each piece needs to be 2 1/2" long.  Please use the small band saw with the crosscut sled.

Step 2:  Mark the center of the block.

Using a felt pen draw a line from corner to corner in both direction.  This will give a center mark for your drilling location.

Step 3:  Drilling your pen blank.

Please watch the following video for instructions.

  • Remember to use a little bit of water while drilling to stop the plastic blanks from melting.

  • DO NOT REMOVE YOUR PROJECT FROM THE DRILLING VICE UNTIL YOU GET TO FINAL DEPTH, or you can end up with two holes or oversized holes.

Step 4: Open up the hole on the end of your blanks - Disc sander

On the disc sander, sand the end of your blank until you get to the hole you drilled.  While you are doing this stop and check to make sure you have not gone past the drill hole.  To do this use the wooden or metal rod above the disc sander to see if you are at the end of the blank.  Often the last little bit of the acrylic blank will come free but not sand away so if you do not check with the rod the little disc will keep on pushing down the blank and your blank will be come too short.

Step 5:  Sand your brass tubes.

Sand your brass tubes with 120 Grit sand paper.  Sanding the tubes makes a better service for the glue to stick too.

Step 6:  Put wax in the ends of your brass tubes.

The wax makes sure that on glue enters into the brass tube during the gluing process.

You might want to paint the inside of our blanks so you do not see the brass tube inside the pen.  Or you might want your pen kit to be Gold.  See picture below.

Step 7:  Gluing pens.

Place you pen blanks and brass tubes in the finishing room for glue by Mrs. McCannon.  Please let her know you need your pens glued.  If you are in Grade 12 you may try gluing your pens.  Please watch the instruction video.

Step 8:  Remove the dried glue of your blanks.

Use the metal rod to push out the glue and wax out of your blanks.  Now disc sand the ends close to the brass tubes.

Step 9:  Use the squaring up jig.

Put you blanks on to the jig and disc sand down the end until you get to the brass tube.  The brass tube needs to be sanded a little bit.  You will know that it is sanded enough when the brass tube gets shinny.  Be careful do not sand too much off or your pen blank will get too short.  Do this on both ends of your blanks.

Step 10:  Set your pen up on the lathe.
